We’ve talked before about iPhone apps that can help you decode the subway, but that’s just scratching the surface of the great apps available to help you during your trip to New York City. As if I needed more fuel to throw on the fire of my iPhone envy, I decided to round up some of the top Big Apple-related apps (as recommended by iPhone users around the Web) in several other categories.

General
NYC Way (Free)
This all-in-one, award-winning city app (which boasts the endorsement of Mayor Bloomberg) includes the answer to pretty much every question you have about NYC, from “Where can I find a public restroom?” to “Why the heck is the Empire State Building lit up all red, yellow and green?”

NYC Way has all the NYC info you could want in one app

The Scoop – New York Times (Free)
In addition to restaurant recommendations (the “Sifty Fifty” restaurant list, named for restaurant critic Sam Sifton) and tips on bars, events and excursions outside the city, this app includes “The Filter,” a brand new GPS-enabled coffee map, so you’ll never be far from your next java jolt.

Special Interest
SoHo In My Pocket (Free)
This app is for the die-hard shoppers and other fans of one of the city’s chicest and busiest neighborhoods. There’s an interactive shopping map and directory with all the info you’ll need on stores, restaurants, hotels, galleries and events in SoHo and Nolita, plus discounts and deals from participating businesses.

iKidNY ($2.99)
This app–which finds kid-friendly spots and services (including indoor and outdoor activities, changing tables, subway elevators and restaurants) no matter where you are in the city–will help make your family trip  as painless and fun as possible.

Eating Out
MenuPages (Free)
Use this app to find restaurants anywhere in Manhattan and Brooklyn, check out full menus and customer reviews, and make a list of restaurants you want to try so you’ll never have to search for the name on the go.

urbanspoon (Free)
Another great app to use in your culinary tour of New York City, urbanspoon allows you to shake your iPhone and get a list of restaurants in your immediate vicinity, along with ratings and reviews.

With urbanspoon, just shake your iPhone for a list of nearby restaurants

OpenTable (Free)
This app enables you to search for restaurant availability by cuisine or neighborhoo and make your dinner reservations on the go, without missing a minute of your trip.

Did I miss any? All you iPhone users out there, (in New York City and around the country, what are your favorite travel-related apps? (Besides What’s Next and Guide to Go, of course!)
